Imoved through the rifts like a ghost, cursing myself for a fool.

I’d been tempted to bring the jars with me, but I’d given Ash my word.

Ridiculous that something as simple as a promise stopped me considering I was so close to getting my revenge after waiting a thousand years.

In all that time, not once had I anticipated everything falling apart over such a simple obstacle—not knowing which soul belonged to which Elder.

The fates had to be laughing their arses off right now. The most mundane complication imaginable could doom our entire species to extinction.

Fucking Magnis. The mage was from another realm. A thousand clues, right in front of me, and I’d missed them all. Deston de Rayne had figured out the truth, and now…now I had no idea where this left me.

Two thousand years of planning my freedom, and everything was going to shite at the last possible moment.

I paused in one of the rifts, ice crackling up over my arms, into my mouth, and down my throat before I wrapped myself in heated flames. How could I have not foreseen this?

Because in all of your complicated, grand schemes, you never took human error into account. Vampire error was more accurate, but same thing.

I flashed through the next series of rifts, moving so fast they became a blur of cutting cold and heat and airless space. When I emerged from the final one, I dragged a fog of rippling power and breathless ice behind me through the misty woods, the Sentinels snapping their toothy jaws as they caught my scent.

Without Rowan—without being weakened by a lack of blood—I raced through the forest, leaving the hunting beasts far behind. At the end of the stone bridge, I paused to get my bearings, the creatures below fighting for better position.

Then I was across and shattering the doors with my fists. “Sabine, I need to talk to you. It’s important.”

“I didn’t expect to see you until your time was up.” Sabine’s droll tone echoed her mocking smile, hands on her hips and perched on the very edge of the precipice behind me. “I know for a fact the remainder of The Thirteen are still alive. Beatrix went on a rant last night at dinner. Whatever the holdup is, brother, I would make haste. She is not happy you are delaying the inevitable.”

My fangs slipped down as I advanced on my sister, forcing her onto the bridge over the thrashing beasts. “I need your help. And for this conversation, the cabin would be better than this place.”

That cabin was my sister’s sanctuary, the one place where her magic was stronger than Beatrix’s. Anything we said there would remain a secret.

And this had to remain a fucking secret.

Sabine flipped her hair back with a pout. “What makes you think I would ever choose you over my sisters?” Her husky laugh was a shade too dry. “And although you owing me a favor has its appeal, so does the idea of Beatrix having you under her thumb.
